George Michael’s Estate Calls Out Tory Lanez

Well, Tory Lanez may or may not have been careless after allegedly sampling a George Michael song without permission.

In a statement shared with a US media outlet on Monday, 14 March, Michael’s estate claimed that Lanez’s song, “Enchanted Waterfall”, used vocal melodies from the late singer’s 1984 hit single, “Careless Whisper”, which was co-written by Andrew Ridgeley.

According to the estate, the 29-year-old rapper requested permission to sample “Careless Whisper” last June. They declined the request, but apparently Lanez sampled and subsequently released “Enchanted Waterfall” anyway.

“So we took immediate action on behalf of the writers, in collaboration with our publishers Warner Chappell Music, to prevent further exploitation,” the statement reads, “as we will not tolerate any unauthorised use of any songs within the catalogues of George Michael and/or Andrew Ridgeley.”

“Enchanted Waterfall” was pulled from Spotify earlier this year, although it currently remains on Apple Music and YouTube.

Lanez has yet to respond to Michael’s estate’s accusations.
